Flowers and latticework in rose, cobalt blue, and gold adorn the china atop the crisp, white tablecloths at the Wellshire Inn. You won’t see the pattern anywhere else; it was created exclusively for the Wellshire and based on the splendor of England’s Tudor period, a theme that is richly executed in this elegant restaurant. Built in 1926 as a clubhouse for the exclusive Wellshire Country Club, the castle-like building fell into disrepair until the late 1970s, when it underwent a painstaking renovation by new owners. Today, it boasts four intimate dining rooms. The elegance is not without whimsy: stained-glass windows, intimate seating nooks, high-beamed ceilings, and a pair of century-old, hand-painted windows share space with a Victorian croquet set, an antique leather hat box, and weathered signs from ancient taverns. And the cuisine is just as pleasing as the atmosphere. Classics like shrimp cocktail and Maryland crab cakes are featured as appetizers, while entree selections include steak Oscar, pan-roasted Cornish game hen, and grilled North Atlantic salmon.
