Center of the logging industry in pioneer days, Stillwater became a busy river town, host to the men who rode the logs downriver and the lumbermen who cleared the forests. Some buildings from that era remain today. An 1848 convention in Stillwater led to the creation of the Minnesota Territory, leading to the town’s nickname of the “birthplace of Minnesota.” The charming downtown area is filled with antique shops, clothing boutiques, and crafts stores.
