Skiing and Norwegian-style ski-jumping came to this area with the arrival of the Norseman Carl Howelsen in 1913, becoming two of the most popular winter sports in the area. Ten national ski-jumping records have been set on Steamboat Springs's Howelsen Hill; the area has produced 47 winter Olympians, which has helped earn it the name of "Ski Town USA." Summer activities include camping, fishing, hot air ballooning, horseback riding, hiking, bicycling, river rafting, canoeing, and llama trekking. One of the largest elk herds in North America ranges near the town. There are more than 100 natural hot springs in the area. The headquarters and access routes to Routt National Forest are in or near Steamboat Springs.
