About St. Johnsbury, Vermont:
This town was named for Ethan Allen's French friend, St. John de Crève Coeur, author of Letters from an American Farmer. The town gained fame and fortune when Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale in 1830. Fairbanks scales, maple syrup, and manufacturing are among its major industries.
