About Portsmouth, Rhode Island:
Originally called Pocasset, Portsmouth was settled by a group led by John Clarke and William Coddington, who were sympathizers of Anne Hutchinson of Massachusetts. Soon after the town was first begun, Anne Hutchinson herself, with a number of fellow religious exiles, settled here and forced Clarke and Coddington to relinquish control. Coddington then went south and founded Newport, with which Portsmouth temporarily united in 1640. Fishing, shipbuilding, and coal mining were the earliest sources of revenue. Today, Portsmouth is a summer resort area.
