The capital of Arizona lies on flat desert, surrounded by mountains and green irrigated fields of cotton, lettuce, melons, and alfalfa and groves of oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and olives. It is a resort area as well as an industrial area. It is also the home of Grand Canyon University (1949). The sun shines practically every day. Most rain falls in December, with some precipitation in summer. There is swimming, fishing, boating, horseback riding, golf, and tennis. Phoenix, like Tucson, is a health center, known for its warm temperatures and low humidity. As a vacation spot, it is both sophisticated and informal.
