A tall and ancient redwood tree stands at the northwest entrance to the city. Nearly two centuries ago, Spanish explorers used it as a landmark, calling it El Palo Alto ("tall tree"). Stanford University is a major economic factor. The city is also one of the nation's most important electronics development and research centers.
