The Parker House, which gave the world its eponymous dinner rolls and the Boston cream pie, is the oldest hotel in the United States in continuous operation (part of the building dates from 1855). The plush lobby and dining room, which date from just before World War I, are breathtaking examples of Edwardian excess. The guest rooms are up to modern standards, as are the sleek and well-laid out fitness room and private, convenient business center. The location, just beneath the peak of Beacon Hill and in the midst of downtown shopping, is marvelously convenient. Great history is attached to the hotel—from the literary dinners with Emerson and Longfellow playing host to Dickens to the stories about JFK, who made this his political headquarters.
