The name of this town is of French origin; its fame comes from the caverns discovered here in 1878. Situated at the junction of Hwys 211 and 340, Luray is 9 miles away from, and within sight of, Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. Headquarters of the park are here. There are three developed recreation areas north and west of town in Washington and Jefferson national forests.
