Provence goes Yankee at L’Escale in tony Greenwich. The fine French-Mediterranean restaurant earns its props for re-creating the Mediterranean on the North Atlantic shore, importing a stone fireplace and terra-cotta floors to warm the dining room and affixing light-filtering thatched bamboo to shade the patio. The solidly traditional menu from French expat Frederic Kieffer keeps pace with a salad of caramelized leeks and chanterelles; apple- and prune-paired foie gras; bouillabaisse; and crispy duck breast. Because it serves breakfast and lunch, as well as a substantial menu at the pewter-topped oak bar, L’Escale is gathering place for both locals and passers-through staying at the neighboring Delamar Hotel. French for “the port of call,” L’Escale allows guests to yacht to dinner, tying up at its waterfront dock. Diners enjoy live jazz on Fridays and a DJ in the lounge later on Saturday evenings. The Sunday brunch is quite popular, and the restaurant often hosts wine tastings.
