About Las Vegas, New Mexico:
Las Vegas once was a stopover on the old Santa Fe Trail. The town prospered as a shipping point, and after the arrival of the railroad in 1879 it began an active period of building and rebuilding. Consequently there are 918 historic buildings (1846-1938). A Ranger District office of the Santa Fe National Forest is located here, as are New Mexico Highlands University and Armand Hammer United World College of the American West.
