In 1830 a group of people from Taos were traveling on the Spanish highway El Camino Real; they camped here and were massacred by the Apache. They were buried under a field of crosses; hence the name Las Cruces ("the crosses"). Situated in the vast farming area of the fertile lower Rio Grande Valley, this region is especially noted for its homegrown green chile as well as pecans, cotton, lettuce, and corn.
