La Junta (la HUN-ta, Spanish for "the Junction") is at a junction of the old Navajo and Santa Fe trails. The town is known for its Koshare Indian Dancers, a group of Explorer Scouts who perform authentic Native American dances here and throughout the country.
This is the center of an irrigated farming area, producing melons and commercial vegetables. Cattle auctions are held throughout the year. The Holbrook Lake area has become a popular recreational center.
