Some people say that this old favorite is beginning to look a bit dated, with 460 rooms that feature typical island décor. Still, the hotel remains popular, especially with budget-minded travelers who like its affordable rates. But there’s another key reason for its continued appeal: King Kam, as the locals call it, is the only beachfront hotel located in Kailua-Kona, by the Kailua Pier. Its other amenities include a swimming pool, two restaurants, a bar, a shopping mall, tennis courts, and a luau four nights a week. The property is named after King Kamehameha the Great because he chose this same site for his residence and administrative capital two centuries ago. Throughout the hotel are images and artifacts of those bygone days, including feather capes of famed Hawaiian warriors. Wander out onto the grounds and you’ll find Ahuena Heiau, the king’s restored temple.
