Kiawah Island (pronounced KEE-a-wah) is one of the richest natural environments in the Middle Atlantic states. The island is a model for maintaining the ecological balance while allowing human habitation. Named for the Native Americans who once hunted and fished here, the island is separated from the mainland by the Kiawah River and a mile-wide salt marsh.

Extensive environmental study has helped preserve nature while also providing for human needs.
