On Big Cypress Bayou, this was once Texas's largest inland river steamboat port. The town had gaslights in 1867, which used gas made from pine knots. Trees were harvested for lumber until the area was nearly stripped of its natural resource. Iron ore was found nearby, and Jefferson was the home of an early foundry. In 1872, this community had a population of more than 35,000.
