Jefferson City was chosen for the state capital in 1826. Near a river landing, it consisted of a foundry, a shop, and a mission. Its growth was not steady and as late as 1895, efforts were made to move the seat of government. Since 1900, however, the city has prospered. The present capitol, completed in 1917, confirmed its status. Named for Thomas Jefferson, it is known locally as "Jeff City."
