On this small island with no traffic lights and only 30 miles of paved roads, the Hotel Lanai is a throwback to the days when the business of the Pineapple Island was strictly pineapples. Built in the 1920s during the plantation era, it is a historic landmark property in a quiet, unspoiled setting on the edge of Lanai City. The guest accommodations are basic but charming, and the rates are very reasonable. Rooms are individually decorated and feature four-poster beds, hardwood floors, ceiling fans (no air-conditioning), Hawaiian quilts, and original local art. There are no TVs or resort activities on the premises, but golf, ocean beaches, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits are available nearby.
