Helena, a river barge port of call since 1880, was once described by Samuel Clemens as occupying "one of the prettiest situations on the Mississippi." This broad, flat section of the Mississippi River Valley is part of the cotton country known as "the Delta" and is the southern end of Crowley's Ridge, a stretch of wind-deposited yellowish loess hills that runs north to the Missouri border.
