Hannibal is world-famous as the home town of the great novelist Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) as well as the setting of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which records many actual events of Clemens's boyhood. Here he served his printer's apprenticeship and gained a fascination for "steamboating" in the days when the river was the source of the town's prosperity.
