About Greensboro, North Carolina:
William Sydney Porter (O. Henry) was born and raised near Greensboro, a diversified Piedmont industrial city whose products are typical of North Carolina: textiles, cigarettes, machinery, and electronic components. It was settled by Quakers, Germans, and the Scotch-Irish with a zeal for political, religious, and economic freedom. Men from this region fought in the Revolution and the War of 1812 and turned to the Confederacy in 1861. It was in Greensboro, the rebel supply depot, that Jefferson Davis met General Johnston after Richmond fell in 1865 and agreed on surrender terms. Today it is an educational, manufacturing, and distribution center.
