This town is named for Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who contracted to put a railroad across Crowley's Ridge, on which the city stands. The ridge, 100 feet high and composed of loess (windblown, fine, yellowish loam that generally stands in vertical cliffs), roughly parallels the Mississippi from Missouri to Helena, Arkansas.
