The Fairmont Algonquin was built in 1889, destroyed by fire in 1914, and rebuilt in the same style in 1915. The classical building features turrets; a red roof; and a wide, covered veranda (added in 1924) spanning the front of the hotel. This seaside resort overlooks Passamaquoddy Bay, with an area of tidal changes that varies 28 feet between the high and low tides. The gracious multiroom lobby offers a gift shop, a pianist performing nightly, high tea in the summertime, and an array of photos of the hotel in various stages through the years. Guest rooms are of period décor in the main historic building and a more contemporary style in the 1993 Prince of Wales wing. The fourth-floor rooms, originally the servants' quarters, offer the best views of the bay and surrounding countryside. Croquet, shuffleboard, and bocce ball are among the extensive activities offered.
