This gracious Southern estate (1915) is a lovely setting for a weekend getaway. It is located just south of uptown Charlotte in the beautiful, prestigious neighborhood of Myers Park. The charming Colonial Revival home was once owned by James Buchanan Duke, who is responsible for establishing both Duke Energy and Duke University. Today, acres of gardens surround the well-maintained home, which has a brick driveway, massive white pillars, a water fountain that sprays water 150 feet into the air, and white rocking chairs on the front porch. Treetop rooms as well as standard guest rooms--some with sleeping porches--are decorated with traditional and antique furniture. The mansion also serves as a facility for meetings and retreats.
