About Dubuque, Iowa:
Facing both Wisconsin and Illinois across the broad Mississippi River, Dubuque became the first known European settlement in Iowa when Julien Dubuque, a French Canadian, came from Québec in 1788 and leased land from the Native Americans to mine lead. After his death, Native Americans barred settlement until 1833 when the territory was opened under a treaty with Chief Black Hawk. Once a boisterous river and mining town, Dubuque had the first bank and the first newspaper in what is now Iowa. Dubuque prospers as a center of more than 300 industries, including publishing, software development, and manufacturing.
