Damariscotta, whose name is an Abenaki word meaning "river of many fishes," has a number of colonial, Greek Revival, and pre-Civil War houses. With the neighboring city of Newcastle across the Damariscotta River, this is a trading center for a seaside resort region extending to Pemaquid Point and Christmas Cove.
