About Culpeper, Virginia:
Volunteers from Culpeper, Fauquier, and Orange counties marched to Williamsburg in 1777 in answer to Governor Patrick Henry's call to arms. Their flag bore a coiled rattlesnake with the legends "Don't Tread on Me" and "Liberty or Death."
In the winter of 1862-1863, churches, homes, and vacant buildings in Culpeper were turned into hospitals for the wounded from the battles of Cedar Mountain, Kelly's Ford, and Brandy Station. Later, the Union Army had headquarters here.
Today, Culpeper is a light industry and trading center for a five-county area, with a healthy agriculture industry.
