Chef Allen Susser, the man behind the fantastic culinary ride known as Chef Allen’s, is one of Florida’s wildest, most passionate cooks. The world is one big melting pot in the eyes of this chef, who confidently tosses borders out the window, mixing ingredients from the Mediterranean with Asia and from Latin America with the Caribbean. It’s like putting on plaid pants, a polka-dot top, an argyle sweater, and a striped jacket and having it miraculously turn out to be the hottest outfit you’ve ever put together. With his gutsy menu of new-world cuisine, Susser shows us that those who don’t take risks will never reach their highest potential. An example is the mango ketchup that comes with his crispy fries. It is a sort of chutney-style condiment that balances sweetness and heat. You’ll never go tomato again. While the room could use a little more attention in terms of upkeep, the dining experience is truly invigorating. If your eyes are tired of seeing the same old, same old on menus, you’ve found your culinary nirvana. There’s nothing here that you’ve seen before. Pistachio-crusted black grouper is the house specialty. Served with a feisty fricassee of rock shrimp with mango, leeks, and coconut rum, it is classic Susser—zesty, creative, and fabulous to look at and scarf down.
