Chatham is among the Cape's fashionable shopping centers. Comfortable estates in the hilly country nearby look out on Pleasant Bay and Nantucket Sound. Monomoy Island, an unattached sand bar, stretches 10 miles south into the sea. It was once a haunt of "moon-cussers"--beach pirates who lured vessels aground with false lights and then looted the wrecks.
