Located near Union Square Park, Candela is an ideal choice for a romantic dinner, a large gathering of friends, or a light bite and a drink at the long, inviting, low-lit bar. Candela, as the name suggests, is filled with ivory-pillared candles of varying sizes, giving the large dining room dressed in dark wood a sexy, amber glow. The space gets its medieval vibe from heavy hanging tapestries, beamed ceilings, and dark oak-planked floors. The menu is sort of like the Gap, offering something for everyone at reasonable prices. Expect a nice selection of Mediterranean, Italian, and Asian dishes like garlicky hummus, lobster and corn ravioli, and sushi dishes like a tempura-battered spicy tuna roll or black cod with a rich miso glaze.
