About Bronx, New York:
Jonas Bronck, a Swedish settler, bought 500 acres of land from the Dutch in 1639, lending
his name to the future borough. Locally it is always referred to as “the Bronx,” never
simply “Bronx.” It is the only borough in New York City on the North American continent
(the others are all on islands).
