A scenic drive along Highway 1 provides 90 miles of views along the rocky Big Sur bluffs, past redwood forests, canyons, waterfalls, secluded beaches, and sheer mountains. This route provides access to many state parks south of Carmel. Garrapata State Park, 7 miles south of Carmel, offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing, coastal access, tide pools, canyons, and whale-watching in winter. Andrew Molera State Park, 21 miles south of Carmel, is Big Sur's largest state park and offers hiking and beach access along rugged headlands. Pfeiffer-Big Sur State Park contains a coastal redwood forest. Recreational opportunities include swimming and hiking. Picnicking and camping facilities are available (fee for camping). There is also a lodge, gift shop, and store. Naturalist programs are offered. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, 36 miles south of Carmel, has a dramatic 80-foot waterfall accessed by a short trail.
