At Amma, an elegant, petite East Side spot serving excellent Indian fare, you’ll find tables jammed with eager curry lovers kvelling over dishes of Goan shrimp, piles of toothsome bhel puri, and plates of frizzled okra with tomatoes and onions. This is not your ordinary curry house, though. Amma is stylish and serene, and the service is efficient and fine. The chef, formerly of Tamarind (see), knows his way around the tandoor oven, and you should by all means order several tandoori dishes like stuffed chicken breasts, crisp and spiced shrimp, or the succulent yogurt-infused lamb chops. Save room for dessert; the rasmalai dumplings are a showstopper.
