Founded around silver mines in the 1870s, Alta was notorious for constant shoot-outs in its 26 saloons. The town became the center of a noted ski area in 1937, with the opening of Utah's first ski resort. Historic markers identify the original townsite. Unusual wildflowers are found in Albion Basin.
